Forcing Hyacinth Bulbs Brings A Hint Of Spring To Indoor Gardens

If your long range weather forecast is like ours, you better bundle up and plan on another 15-20″ of snow before spring arrives. Time to start forcing hyacinth bulbs and creating a beautiful spring-like garden indoors!
When you get hyacinths to bloom indoors before their normal bloom time it’s called “forcing” the bulbs to grow. They really are so easy and they make wonderful gifts.
You know how anxious people are to see the first jolt of spring color after a long, grey, cold winter! (Especially if Phil sees his shadow today!) You’re sure to see smiles when you give hyacinth bulbs and vases as hostess gifts, or birthday gifts, or even Valentine’s Day gifts.
A few years ago, I gave my mother and sister hyacinth bulbs and vases to enjoy during the winter. Now, it’s become our tradition for me just to provide the bulbs for the vases they already have. We’re always comparing to see which “gardener” has the best results!
And don’t forget to get some for yourself! Try grouping a few together to brighten up your kitchen counter, a nightstand, or your desk at work. They’re saying, “just hold on a few more weeks, spring is on its way!”
Below is my short video that shows you how to force hyacinths indoors and what kind of vase is best to use with these bulbs. Believe me, it’s easier than you think! No green thumb required! This is a great project for your kids to plant the bulbs, watch the roots and leaves grow each day, and see the flower open into full bloom. (The pink hyacinth shown above is the one you’ll see in the video that wasn’t in full bloom when I shot the video.)
Have fun and enjoy these beautiful flowers!
