Annual Poinsettia Field Trip Kicks Off My Holiday Spirit

Brrrr!  Say good morning to a brisk 18 degrees outside today!  But it was warm and toasty yesterday inside my favorite Family Tree Nursery greenhouse during my annual Christmas trip to enjoy all their many varieties of poinsettias.  I just love looking at all the wonderful shades of red, burgundy, pink and white.  I look forward to it every year!ft_poinsettiatree4

ft_poinsettia5It’s like a Christmas winter wonderland when you take the first step into their greenhouse.  Tables and tables full of poinsettias that can’t help but throw you into the Christmas spirit.  And each year there are new marbled or speckled varieties with those velvety-looking bracts (the colored leaves that look like flower petals).

ft_christmasfountainWhether it’s a tree of poinsettias, a unique container garden, or an outdoor fountain decorated for the holidays, I always walk away with wonderful planting and decorating ideas  just from their displays.

For example, there’s no doubt that grouping several poinsettias together results in a dramatic, show stopping mass of brilliant color.  However, I forget about the power of container gardening with poinsettias.  ft_redpoinsettia1This combination of a bright red poinsettia with the cyclamen’s white blooms and variegated foliage is really pretty in a bark-covered tall planter.

Enjoy your poinsettias this year.  You may choose one of the standard red varieties or you may try one of the new burgundy or pinks.  Regardless, poinsettias are a holiday favorite and a great gift idea for anyone on your list.
