Who Needs A Garden Green House?

As outside temperatures continue to drop this week, I’m thinking and writing about greenhouses.  After all, tis the season for gardeners to mourn the approaching end of the growing season and dream about their own garden green house paradise – where they can stick their fingers in the dirt and smell new plants all winter long.  But who needs a garden green house and what would they do with it?greenhouseseedlings

As we look ahead to the holidays and you consider the best gardening gifts for your green thumbed friends and family, take a look at the list below.  If your friend or family member enjoys doing any of the following, you can be sure a green house gift will be a hit!

  1. Pushing the spring calendar to get their garden planted.  A garden green house helps gardeners get a head start by planting seeds long before they could be planted in the ground.  By the time the weather is warm enough for outside planting, the green house plants are already growing!
  2. Growing herbs and vegetables for winter use.   There’s nothing tastier than fresh from the garden.   Some plants like basil, celery, dill, leaf lettuce, mustard greens, oregano, parsley, spinach and turnips grow very well in green houses.  A few vegetables like cabbage, garlic, green onions, cherry tomatoes, and leeks do OK but do require warmer temperatures.  Straight from the green house to the kitchen!
  3. Saving favorite plants for next year’s garden.  It’s very easy to over-winter some plants and put them back outside in the spring.  Usually a fall trim is advised for better results.  Whether saving the whole plant or taking cuttings, green houses help continue the growing cycle through the winter.
  4. Selecting a large supply and large variety of plants.  Green house gardening makes it easy for gardeners to plant lots of various seedlings for use in their gardens.  The luxury of having lots of choices adds to the gardening fun and creativity.  And staggering the planting times provides a continuous supply of healthy plants throughout the season.
  5. Propagating and experimenting with new varieties.  There’s something special about creating your own plant variety and being the only one in the neighborhood to have it!  A garden green house provides the opportunity for the mad scientist to get to work in the garden!

Anyone who enjoys working in the garden outside will love gardening inside a green house.  Great gardening gifts loaded with good times for years to come.  (Check out  the many styles, sizes, and prices of home garden green houses – and FREE shipping, too!)
