I used to balk at the thought of adding a compost kitchen bin anywhere in my kitchen.  The smell, the bugs, the mess!  No way.  But I’ve found these kitchen compost crocks that not only work without leaving an odor or a mess, they also add to the style and kitchen decor.  What a wonderful gardening gift for the dedicated composter or anyone who needs a nudge to get started.gsstonewarecomposter

Kitchen Composting Do’s and Don’ts

Things like vegetables and fruits, spoiled food, bread, grains, coffee filters, tea bags, eggshells, and paper or cardboard stained or soiled with food, are perfectly acceptable to add to kitchen compost.  However, you don’t want to add any meat, meat products (like juices, gravy, grease, and bones), fish, or dairy products.  They can start to smell really bad and can attract unwanted visitors like mice and rats.

gsstainesscomposterOf course, every household will produce different amounts of kitchen waste depending on the number of people in the house and the amount of cooking.  So, there are no hard and fast rules about how often you should empty a compost kitchen bin.   Some people empty it every other day while others may be able to go a week without emptying their kitchen scraps.  Just be sure to check it frequently and empty it regularly.

gsredwhitebluecomposterA good kitchen compost pail or crock should be easy to empty and also contain scraps without releasing unwanted odors or attracting fruit flies or gnats.  Some form of carbon filters are often included to eliminate odors (be sure to check size when ordering replacement filters) and many containers are well-suited for biodegradable bags that make disposal even easier.

Most people find they use a compost pail more regularly if it’s readily accessible.  Having to carry scraps out to the garage every time can be a pain.  So, it needs to be close and the kitchen compost crock needs to look good on the kitchen counter!  (However, here’s a kitchen compost pail that tucks nicely under the kitchen sink and even hooks on the cabinet door.)gsundercountercomposter

With lots of designs to choose from, you’re sure to find a compost kitchen bin that adds to the kitchen decor and no one will guess it’s a composter!  Another great gardening gift idea.
